Hugo wrote about Orphans on Patreon: September 2013, I invited Sacri Cuori to come to Australia and go on tour with me as a double header Fatalists/Sacri Cuori show - what a marvellous idea! ! Landing direct from Italy, the Romagnoli boys arrived with their luggage lost in transit with an additional musician and a road manager! I nearly passed out with surprise, but on with the Show - we had to re-hire transport and backline and just like that, our bottom line was on life support.

After driving from Melbourne to the Queensland border via Bondi Beach and getting stuck in a culture-shock motel in Singleton when a regional show canceled, we traversed the flat bleak landscapes of South Australia all the way to Adelaide, road kill for the taking, crows crowing, the Romagnoli's complaining about Aussie road food (yeah, understandably) and then it was back to Batman ( Melbourne city) and Soundpark studio to cut tracks for a new Sacri Cuori album AND Fatalists album!

Songs from Sacri Cuori's fantastic 'Delone' album were cut there, everybody playing demonically well after a run of live shows, with Idge engineering and Michelangelo Russo as guest multi-instrumentalist, and in the late evening, maybe we'd tape Fatalists sessions. I had lyrics written on the road on pieces of torn paper and in a diary I never read. Antonio Gramentieri and I sketched out Cosmic Joke and Orphans in that Singleton hell-motel with a couple of guitars and my scratched out A4 pages. Then there was The Age of Seduction, left over from the We Never Had Control sessions. And Roll Back the Stone. Suddenly we had four fantastic new songs! We agreed to try and finish these tracks for a summer tour-only EP for the following year.

I'd just moved into a new house in Melbourne with some of the True Spirit where we would eventually build a studio and record what became The Spirit album. Chandelier Girl and Safe From Memory were two new songs I wrote reflecting my state of moodiness at that time. Both tracks were taped late in the middle of the night at night with Dugald engineering. The songs were sent to violinist Vicki Brown in Tucson USA for her magic touch and to Diego and Checco in Ravenna - we worked by exchanging files for the first time and it felt raw but somehow the magic remained intact. At the time, it seemed there wasn't enough material for an LP so we decided to 'orphan' Roll Back the Stone and keep it to EP length, producing a limited-edition CD edition only. But coming back to it years later I see it with new eyes. So I've dived into the studio archive and produced some bonus tracks to make Orphans into a full album.
